Pumpkin Erissery(Mathan Erissery)

Erissery is one of the main traditional kerala dish.It can be made with different vegetables like pumpkin, yam, raw plantain etc.Today am going to share pumpkin erissery,this is  my mother’s recipe....


Black Eyed Beans/ Red Beans - 1/4cup


Pumpkin ( cut into small cubes) -2  cups
Grated coconut -1/2 cup
Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
Garlic – 1 clove
Shallots - 2-3
Dry red chillies -3
Salt to taste

For tempering

Mustard seeds – 1/2tsp
Shallots -3 sliced
Dry red chillies -2
Curyy leaves – 2 spring
Coconut Oil –  2tbs

For garnishing

Grated coconut – 2tbs


1.Wash and soak Black Eyed Beans/Red Beans in water overnight or for 7-8 hrs during day,then pressure cook by adding 1 cup water and little salt.(3-4 whistles is enough to be done).
2. Grind grated coconut, cumin seeds,red dry chillies, garlic, shallots and turmeric powder by adding little water.

3.Cook the pumpkin  until it is done  by adding 1 cup of water.When it is done,mash it using a spoon.

4. Now you can add the cooked beans  and continue cooking for sometime,then add the coconut paste and mix it well.Cook on low flame till it reaches your required consistency.

5.Heat oil in a pan,add mustard seeds,when it splutters  add the sliced shallots,dry red chillies and curry leaves.Pour  this to the erissery.

6.For garnishing, in the same pan, add the grated coconut and fry till it becomes brown color.Then add it this to the dish.

Enjoy with rice!!!!!!
